Montessori Education

‘Education is a natural process carried out by the human individual, and it is acquired not by listening to words, but by experiences in the environment.’ Maria Montessori
At Hearth and Home Montessori School our pre-school program is a warm, nurturing introduction to a childs first ‘school’ experience. We welcome children aged 3-5 years. Our classroom is a multi-age program enabling the older children to experience being peer leaders. Together the children learn patience, kindness and respect for each other. Guided by the work of Maria Montessori we create an environment where children are inspired to reach their highest academic, personal and social potential.

Maria Montessori was an early childhood education pioneer in Italy one century ago. As the first female physician in her country she developed the simple concept of tailoring education to children’s natural needs. Dr Montessori observed that children are naturally curious and tactile learners and that education should seek to incorporate these traits into their everyday learning. She believed that if a child is properly guided to enjoy education up to age six, she not only becomes at ease with herself and surroundings but continues to be a curious and confident learner through-out the school years.

At Hearth and Home Montessori School, we create an environment in which each child develops independently at their own pace. The Montessori approach believes that children are active learners who are able to self-teach provided they are they are given the means to do so. To help children reach their full potential we give children freedom to choose activities within a specially designed environment. All learning materials are placed at eye level and organized so that children can feel comfortable knowing where everything is. Dr. Montessori recognized that young children have a highly developed sense of order and appreciate having their learning materials organized with such care. Seating and shelving are scaled down to a childs size increasing the childs independent movement. Children are guided to clean up their own messes with child-sized tools and learn the powerful effect of polite phrases such as ‘please’ and ‘thank-you.’

At Hearth and Home Montessori children learn through ‘doing’, building confidence, independence and experiencing the joy of individual discovery and mastery of skills. Each day the children will come together for circle time, group lessons, singing, music and movement as well as having uninterrupted blocks of time for independent exploration of the classroom. Outside play, nature walks and working in our garden will also occur daily weather permitting. We acknowledge and respect that children learn at different paces and have different learning styles and interests. Therefore children are not forced to participate in an activity they are not interested in. One child may enjoy painting and stringing beads while another might enjoy books and map work. Children may work with each activity as long as they choose, allowing mastery of the skill and increasing self-confidence. With this approach children become empowered and feel a sense of control over which choices they make. This has a positive effect on discipline and behavior problems. There are fewer struggles for control between child and teacher and children have fewer reasons for ‘acting out’ and instead become proud of their accomplishments.

The preschool curriculum of Hearth and Home Montessori School has four basic components, which includes Practical Life, Sensorial, Language and Mathematics. Our classroom contains all the didactic materials created by Dr. Montessori as well as cultural extensions consisting of geography, history, botany, the arts and music and movement. Creative play is also provided for and encouraged. The learning tools themselves are ideal for the preschool level because they are interactive with all the senses. Instead of having to grasp language or mathematic skills with the mind alone, the children manipulate sand-paper numbers, letters, different sized blocks and cut-out wooden letters to handle and initiate spelling with. In the culture area, wooden maps and botany puzzles allow children to internalize geographical information and concepts in nature. Seasons, holidays and global celebrations are recognized and woven through-out the various areas of the classroom. Our well-rounded curriculum gives children a love of learning that lasts a life-time.

Children also take part in a peace education program learning to become active listeners, effective solution finders and adept in conflict resolution skills.
